SAT Reading & Writing Practice Questions
The Digital SAT Reading & Writing section tests four domains across two adaptive 32-minute modules. Each question has its own short passage — there are no long reading comprehension essays. Craft and Structure and Information and Ideas together account for over half the section.
Reading & Writing Domains
Craft and Structure
~28% of Reading & WritingCraft and Structure is the largest Reading & Writing domain on the Digital SAT, asking you to analyze how authors choose words, organize passages, and connect ideas across texts. Mastering this section means moving beyond surface comprehension to understanding why an author made specific choices—a skill that pays dividends on every high-difficulty question.
Information and Ideas
~26% of Reading & WritingInformation and Ideas questions measure your ability to extract, interpret, and reason about the content of written and visual texts—finding central claims, evaluating supporting evidence, and drawing well-supported inferences. These are the foundational comprehension skills that underlie all strong academic reading.
Standard English Conventions
~26% of Reading & WritingStandard English Conventions questions test your command of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure—the mechanical building blocks that make writing clear and precise. Unlike comprehension-based questions, these have objectively correct answers grounded in well-defined grammatical rules that you can learn systematically.
Expression of Ideas
~20% of Reading & WritingExpression of Ideas questions test your ability to build coherent, well-organized arguments by synthesizing information from notes and selecting the precise transitions that connect ideas within and between sentences. These questions reward students who understand not just what to say, but how to say it effectively.
About the SAT Reading & Writing Section
The Digital SAT Reading & Writing section consists of two 32-minute modules of 27 questions each (54 total). Unlike older SAT formats with long reading passages, the Digital SAT uses one short passage (25–150 words) per question — meaning you never need to read a 700-word essay just to answer one question. This format rewards precise, efficient reading.
Questions within each module appear in the same order by type: Craft and Structure questions come first, followed by Information and Ideas, then Standard English Conventions, and finally Expression of Ideas. Within each type, questions go from easier to harder. Knowing this structure lets you allocate time strategically and spot which question type you're working on before you read the question.

In rapidly expanding cities, green corridors—strips of vegetation connecting parks and nature reserves—play a critical role in preserving biodiversity. Without these corridors, animal populations become isolated, unable to exchange genetic material with neighboring groups. Conservationists argue that even narrow plantings along roadways can sustain meaningful wildlife movement, as long as the vegetation is dense enough to offer cover. As used in the text, what is the most precise meaning of "sustain"?
The following text is adapted from a 2019 historical account of early cartography. Medieval European cartographers faced a fundamental problem: the instruments available for measuring longitude at sea were wholly inadequate. Ships regularly ran aground on coastlines that should, by the charts, have been hundreds of miles distant. The inaccuracy of these maps was not due to ignorance—many cartographers were highly educated—but rather to the absence of any reliable method for determining east-west position while at sea. As used in the text, what is the most precise meaning of "wholly"?
The following text is adapted from a 2020 article on sleep science. Scientists have long known that sleep deprivation impairs cognitive performance. A newer line of research suggests that the mechanism behind this impairment involves the glymphatic system—a network of channels in the brain that clears metabolic waste products during sleep. During wakefulness, the brain accumulates proteins such as beta-amyloid that are associated with neurodegenerative disease. During deep sleep, the glymphatic system expands and flushes these proteins from neural tissue. This finding implies that chronic sleep deprivation may accelerate neurodegeneration, not merely impair daily cognition. Which choice best states the main idea of the text?
The following text is adapted from a 2021 cultural history essay. Jazz improvisation is often described as a form of spontaneous composition—music created in real time without prior notation. While this description captures something essential, it can obscure the deep structures that organize improvisational performance. Jazz musicians do not improvise from nothing: they work within a vocabulary of scales, chord substitutions, rhythmic figures, and melodic phrases accumulated through years of practice and active listening. What appears spontaneous to the audience has often been assembled from highly internalized materials, recombined in real time according to shared musical conventions. Which choice best states the main idea of the text?
